On September 4 Disney introduced Premier Access with the release of Mulan. Premier Access is a one time add on to your Disney+ subscription. It gives you the ability to watch a movie before it’s available to all other Disney+ subscribers. Premier Access for Mulan is $29.99 depending on where you live.
The Premier Access offer will be available until November 2, 2020. After that, you will have to wait until the movie is available on Disney+. If you do pay for Premier Access you will be able to watch Mulan for as long as you are an active Disney+ subscriber. If you cancel Disney+ that $30 is gone. It is very important to remember and take note that you are not buying the movie, just access.
Mulan will be available to all Disney+ subscribers on December 4, 2020 for no additional cost. This is one hell of a bait and switch. I so want to watch this movie but I’ll wait. If you pay $30 now, you are just renting it for 3 months before it’s given away for free as part of your Disney+ subscription anyway.
From a business standpoint, this is a brilliant strategy to grow revenue from an already dedicated group of people who love your product. With movie theaters closed or partially open, I do think that some customers will jump at the chance to watch new blockbuster quality content. These are just my thoughts. What do you think? Would you feel different if Disney used the same strategy on a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie like the upcoming Black Widow Movie?
